What Are French Bulldogs NOT Allowed To Eat?

Bottomless! That’s what describes the appetite of a French Bulldog.

Frenchies love to eat almost anything and at any time. They love to jump on anything you drop for them.

Obviously, our pups are not aware of any danger when it comes to eating. So, Frenchie parents have to be their guardians and pay attention to what is fed to them.

Below, we have created a list of the most toxic products and food that should not be in a French Bulldogs diet.

10 Most Dangerous Food For Frenchies

Compared to other dogs, French Bulldogs have sensitive digestive systems, so it's important to be cautious about a French Bulldog's diet

On one hand, given they are a small breed, some foods can be dangerous, causing choking or intestinal blockage.

On the other hand, other foods can contain harmful substances. If pup parents are not careful, the end result can be fatal in either case.

As always, if you suspect your Frenchie has eaten something bad, don't wait for symptoms to appear. Take them to the vet immediately. Waiting for symptoms to show might be too late.

Chocolate

We all love chocolate, but it's a big no-no for dogs! But, even a small amount can be dangerous. Chocolate contains substances that are toxic to dogs like theobromine and caffeine.

Puppies cannot metabolize these substances like we humans do, so it is best to keep chocolate out of reach.

Avocado

Despite being extremely nutritious for us humans, avocados aren't a good treat for dogs

Avocados contain a substance called persin that can cause problems for dogs. It's like a natural pesticide that's harmful to animals. So, if you're eating a salad or avocado toast, please keep away from your wrinkly friend.

Tomatoes

Another substance that is toxic to dogs is tomatine which is found in tomatoes. Tomatoes can be harmful to dogs, especially when unripe.

This substance is found in the stems, leaves, and unripe fruits. While ripe tomatoes are generally safe, it's best to avoid feeding them to your dog to be on the safe side.

Garlic

Another common ingredient found in human food is garlic. Garlic's a no-no for dogs. Even a little bit can be bad news.

It's got this stuff called allicin that messes up their blood cells. So, keep garlic away from your pup, whether it's raw, cooked, or in powder form.

Sweets

Sweets, including cookies and cakes, are bad for French Bulldogs. These sweets are made using granulated sugar which is not only bad for humans, but also for Frenchies. Sugar can cause weight gain, diabetes, cavities, and behavioral problems.

There are also artificial sweeteners, like xylitol, that can also be harmful. Xylitol is often found in sugar-free candy, baked goods, and peanut butter. Even human toothpaste contains xylitol, so be careful about using it on your Frenchie’s teeth.

Xylitol can cause liver failure in French Bulldogs. So, if you want to give your Frenchie a treat with artificial sweeteners, make sure they are not made with xylitol.

In general, giving sugar to your pup is not a great idea. In addition to dietary issues, small sugary candy can easily choke or have intestinal blockages which can only be removed surgically by a vet.

Prepared Bones

We love the idea of dogs and bones from cartoons, but cooked bones can be dangerous. They're easy to chew and can break into sharp pieces that can injure your Frenchie's throat, stomach, or intestines.

These sharp pieces or bone splinters can cause problems very quickly. This means you may not even reach the vet by the time damage is done.

These injuries can be serious, so it's important to avoid giving your Frenchie cooked bones, especially chicken bones. This is especially important if you're feeding your dog a biologically appropriate raw food (BARF) diet.

Dairy Products

Dogs can love ice cream, but it's important to remember that they can be lactose intolerant. This is a digestive condition that occurs when the body can't digest lactose.

If your Frenchie has diarrhea or allergic reactions after eating dairy, they might be lactose intolerant. Symptoms include paw licking, excessive itching, and head shaking.

Some products that are best to avoid include giving them milk, cheese, ice cream, or any other milk-based products.

Fatty Foods

Who doesn’t love french fries, bacon, or some sausage. Unfortunately, they can be bad for French Bulldogs and can cause pancreatitis.

Foods heavy in fat can lead to vomiting and diarrhea as a dog’s digestive system struggles to break down fatty content.

Caffeinated Drinks

Coffee and tea might sound tasty and tempting for your Frenchie, but they're not good for them. Dogs are more sensitive to caffeine than humans. Even a small amount can make your Frenchie restless and hyperactive.

Caffeine can also raise blood pressure and damage organs like the liver, heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Be careful with products containing caffeine, like tea and energy drinks. And remember to keep coffee grounds out of reach, as curious dogs might try to eat them.

Alcoholic Drinks

We know you'd never intentionally give your Frenchie alcohol, but it's important to be aware of products that contain alcohol. Syrups and raw bread dough can have hidden alcohol content.

Alcohol, just like chocolate, is toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. If your Frenchie consumes alcohol, they might become disoriented, restless, pant excessively, and vomit. Alcohol intoxication can be fatal if left untreated.
